Henry Ford Hospital earns prestigious Baby-Friendly® designation
March 21, 2018
—
Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit has earned the prestigious Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) designation. This designation is awarded to hospitals that follow strict breastfeeding and maternal care guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Less than 500 of the 3,000 hospitals in the United States have earned this designation.
To earn this designation, Henry Ford Hospital went through a rigorous process to commit to the 10-Steps to Successful Breastfeeding guidelines. Some of these steps include encouraging skin-to-skin contact between mom and baby within an hour of birth, having baby “room-in” with mom 23 of the 24 hours following birth, and helping mom initiate breastfeeding within an hour of birth.
Our WIN Network: Detroit group prenatal care mothers initiate breastfeeding at a rate of 90% – higher than average rates for the city of Detroit. Our success in helping moms start breastfeeding after the birth of their child would not be possible without the commitment of Henry Ford Hospital to the Baby-Friendly ® practices, and we are so happy to provide our group prenatal care families with this exceptional clinical care from Henry Ford Hospital.
