Can my baby sleep safely in a play pen instead of a crib?

Dear Winnie,

I am due to have my baby soon but I don’t have a crib. I have a play pen that my sister gave me. Can my baby sleep in that or do I need to get a crib too?

Good news! Your baby can definitely sleep safely in a play pen if you don’t have a crib. Make sure you follow the rules of safe sleep – put your baby to sleep on his or her back, and don’t allow toys, blankets, or pillows in your baby’s sleep space. Put the play pen near your bed while baby is sleeping so that you can tend to the baby quickly at night, but don’t sleep with baby in your bed – that’s not safe. Good luck with your new baby!
